The Way of Saint James in Salzburg - Self guided walking tour in Austria. You'll walk on Salzburg's Saint James Trail, from boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps, through the Rupert's Winkl and past high mountains into the Alps. The former clerical state of Salzburg always gave pilgrims a warm welcome. The route passes interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside villages and picturesque trails. The routes are fairly easy but long. Hikers should have average to above average levels of fitness.

Tour details:
The 'pre-alps' region around Salzburg is a lovely landscape of gentle hills, little farmhouses and very small villages, and lakes. Beyond Salzburg you are among the German mountains, following a river trail and walking over little passes. On the Jacob's Way the daily walks are sometimes quite long (6 hours walking) but there are almost no significant ascents and some days are short enough to enable you to visit places of particular interest. Some experience of self-guided walking is useful but there are plenty of possibilities to take the bus or train to shorten the walks.

Day 1: Individual arrival at Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee

Day 2: By train to Oberhofen - Eugendorf
Start the day with a scenic train ride to the start of Salzburg's Saint James Trail. The walking path then passes bucolic scenery down the hills to Lake Wallersee. Follow the trail to your charming hotel in Eugendorf. Walking time about 6 hours.

Day 3: Eugendorf - Salzburg
You'll enjoy today's walk as you see the distant mountains, leading to your destination. A comfortable walk brings you downhill to Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and historical sights wait to be discovered. If you like, take a side trail to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg. Rest your head in a comfy hotel bed in Salzburg tonight. Walking time about 3,5 hours.

Day 4: Salzburg - Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall
This morning, head in the direction of Mount Untersberg. When you arrive at the quaint town of Großgmain you'll cross the German border to Rupert's Winkl. From there, enjoy checking out the salt metropolis in Bad Reichenhall, where you'll spend the night. Walking time about 5 hours.

Day 5: Bad Reichenhall - Unken
Today you'll follow the Saalach River back into the country of Salzburg. Passing Lake Salzachsee, the trail goes deeper and deeper into the mountains. Day 6: Unken - Waidring/St. Ulrich
The first part of toady's route follows the Saalach River into the widening valley around the picture postcard village of Lofer. This mountain village retains its authentic charm. Walking time about 5 hours
