From the festival city of Salzburg to the UNESCO city of Halstatt, you'll encounter friendly hospitality and wonderful landscapes. The Wachau Valley is the hot spot for wine and fruits, so enjoy your walking tour through the vineyards and the view over the Danube River. You will discover Vienna on a guided cycle tour showing you 600 years of the Habsburger Monarchy.

Tour Details: You should have average to above average physical fitness ability to take these hikes. There are no dangerous walking trails but you will walk on a high alpine trail and therefore good equipment is necessary.

Day 1: Arrival to Salzburg
Overnight in Salzburg.

Day 2: City Mountain - Kapuzinerberg, Festungsberg and Mönchsberg
Today's tour begins by viewing the City Mountains which are part of the famous views down to the historic city with alleys and churches in the center. You'll start your tour going up to a monastery where Pope Paul stayed when he visited Salzburg. Passing the historic center you will walk up the fortress hill to get a view of the Bavarian Alps. From there, walk over the "monk" hill passing by the museum of modern art and ending next to the brewery of the Augustinian monks. Check out the gardens, old fashioned beer halls and local food. Feeling energetic? Walk back to the hotel. If not, just take the city bus.

Day 3: Salzburg - Bus to St. Gilgen - Pilgrimage Trail to St. Wolfgang
In the morning, take the public bus to St. Gilgen where you will follow the historic Pilgrimage Trail from the middle Ages to St. Wolfgang. Enjoy sparkling lakes, stunning mountain peaks and quaint lakeside villages as you walk. After all, you are in the area where The Sound of Music was filmed! Enjoy your cozy hotel in St. Wolfgangsee or Strobl that night. (Luggage transfer!)

Day 4: Bus to Bad Ischl - Walking tour on the Brine Pipeline Trail from Bad Goisern to Hallstatt.
The Brine Pipeline Trail starts in the former Emperor City of Bad Ischl and runs slightly upwards until you reach the Salt Mountain in Hallstatt. The trail is partly built into the rock and the salt water still runs to the saline where they produce salt. In Hallstatt you will find the oldest public salt mine in the world, burial fields of the Celts and a fjord-looking lake.

Day 5: Hallstatt - ice cave and high alpine walking trail.
Discover the world heritage sites of Mount Krippenstein with famous ice caves and spectacular alpine walking trails on the plateau. Depending on your fitness, you may choose between an easy round trip tour of 3 hours or try something more strenuous for a 5 hour hike. As you walk, the glacier on Mount Dachstein is always in view. A highlight for today is the guided tour of the ice cave, high in the mountains. Get a good night's rest at your hotel in Hallstatt/Bad Goisern. (Luggage transfer).

Day 6: Tag: Hallstatt - train to Melk - boat to Krems
Start the day with a train ride from Hallstatt, passing by the Salzkammergut with its lakes and mountains. The route requires you to change the train twice, to reach the Wachau Valley. Then you take a boat tour from Melk to Krems. You will see historic villages, little wine hamlets, vineyards, castles on hills and many other places of interest. The tour ends at your hotel in the city of Krems. (No luggage transfer, you have to carry your suitcase on the boat and train)

Day 7: Walking tour Krems - Dürnstein.
Your route starts in the vineyards directly on the outskirts of town. Hike uphill to get a stunning view of the Danube River and Krems as well as the impressive Göttweig Monastery. Across the hills, walk to the ruins of Durnstein Fortress, where the legend says King Lionheart was held captive and Blondel rescued him. From there, hike down to the historic town of Durnstein, filled with charming, winding alleys. Take the local bus back to your hotel in Krems.

Day 8: Krems - Train to Vienna - guided cycle tour in Vienna.
Take the train to Vienna and check in to your hotel. Afterwards enjoy a guided bike tour of Vienna (optional!). Your leader will show you the major sights, explain historical facts and allow time for you to explore on your own. You'll spend tonight in a Hotel in Vienna. (No luggage transfer, you have to carry your suitcase on the train)
. 15 km, 3 hours to cycle

Day 9: Walking tour to Mount Kahlenberg and/or sightseeing in Vienna.
You have a choice today of hiking or sightseeing in Vienna. If you decide to hike, start at the famous Vienna hamlet of Grinzing with its wine restaurants, small alleys and vineyards. Take the tram to Grinzing and walk up to the view point at Mount Kahlenberg. You're rewarded with an amazing view of the Vienna Forest as well as Vienna and the Danube River. After the hike, select a restaurant and drink a glass of wine while listening to Austrian music. Your other option is to tour Vienna on your own.
